August 28, 2006 fourth BMX show
At the start of this day Joanie and I were completely out of spirits... Jenna got to see the BMX guys at the one o'clock show and we didn't! Joe and Jeremy were going to the fair and Jenna got to go with them while Joanie and I had to stay home and baby-sit! Mom had an appointment to go to so there was no way at all that we were going to the fair with them! Jenna came home with wonderful stories of them (as usual) and it was just making our hunger for the BMX shows worse.
We began to plan (more as a joke and wishful thinking) to go to the eight o'clock show, and to bring them brownies (mostly Joanie's idea). We planned it so that Joe would drop us off at the fair a little bit before the show, and then pick us up a little after it.
For some reason we presented our plan to Mom and Joe (probably because we were dying to go see the BMX guys again!). Mom said that if it was all right with Joe then we had permission to go. Joe was kind enough to drop us off (because we had planned it before, he sacrificed going to seeing his friend in Anchorage to take us to the fair! That was really nice of him!) but the plans changed a little. Jeremy (our brother of course) was going to pick us up after work, so we were going to have to stay out a little later and wait for him at the Noisy Goose (a restaurant near the fairgrounds). But none of that mattered to us... we were going to another BMX show!
We made brownies (no, really, we did), some for ourselves (the kids would have killed us if we had only made one batch!) and some for the BMX guys. Before we left for the fair we were all in a state of unrest. We just wanted to leave (even though if we left we would be early!). But better to spend it at the fair then to wait at home. When we left Joe dropped us off at the Noisy Goose and we walked across the road over to the fairgrounds. It was still a while until the show (it was even a while until the practice started!) so we had to find something to do with our extra time (a point of interest... I was carrying the brownies for the guys in a bag all before the show). We were going to watch the performer at the Bluebonnet stage, but the performer was just finishing and there were no shows after that.
But, being close to the BMX tent as we were walking and trying to figure out what to do with our extra time, we saw Jeremy Fanberg walking with his girlfriend! We waved and said "Hi" and he said "Hi" too. He actually looked pretty happy about us being back at the fair again (knowing that we would never go to the fair without going to at least one BMX show).
After he had walked away, we saw Jaren Grob passing by also. He recognized us too and smiled really big as he waved at us... I must say these were very exciting moments for us!We decided that before the show we would go look at the animals or something like that. We took some pictures on the stands in the animal show place and then it was about time to head over to the BMX tent. They were starting practices!
We walked into the tent and went over to the right (there were people already sitting in the middle of the stands where we usually sit) and sat down. Which meant that we were closer to where the signing table was. Keith noticed us sitting there and Jenna said to him "so, I lied." (she had thought that her earlier show would be the last one and had told them that), Keith just smiled.
There was a lot of goofing off from the guys before the show. I can bet that they were teasing Josh (about what, I don't know, I can only guess...) and he kept laughing really hard. Mike started dancing to the music at one point (he was still sitting on his bike too) and it was completely hilarious (you'd have to see it to believe it!)! All the guys were laughing at him. Then Keith playfully turned off the music to make them mad. It was really funny when they all looked over the edge down at him and started yelling!
We were getting them all pumped again during practice. I was surprised to see Brian on a skateboard during it.
When the show started and Keith said his usual "who had been to the show before?" thing he turned to us and said "And not you guys," with a huge smile "I know you guys have been here before!". We laughed really hard and then the show began!
A little bit into the show Joanie yelled out "We love you Josh!", which made the guys laugh because they love teasing Josh. A little while later we heard Mike (as Josh was biking over to his perch to get the mic. from Keith) yelling out in a girly voice "We love you Josh!", teasing not only Josh, but us! It was so funny!
Keith got kind of upset during the show because he couldn't pull the trick he wanted to do. He tried it three times and wasn't satisfied with it. We clapped and yelled anyway, everyone needs encouragement.
After the show when everyone started clearing out we headed over to the signing table. Jenna pulled out her camera before we got over to the table and she pointed it Jeremy's way. Jeremy made his face curl into a sour expression that looked quite similar to The Grinch's face. It was really funny. Then he took his water bottle and put it over his eyes. Talk about a strange kind of ham! It was awesome!
Then we walked over to the signing table with the opening line of "Guess what, guys, we made you brownies!" and then put the container down on the table in front of them. Keith thanked us but the other guys said something a little different. Jaren started with his line "Are those funny brownies? " (speaking of an Alaskan thing where they actually put drugs into brownies, I think that's what it is, even though they are usually called special brownies, we know this from our brother Joe who hangs out with quite a few people and their strange friends), he was joking, and we could tell that but I squeaked out "No!" Joanie said "There ain't nothin' funny about these brownies!" Don said "There's something funny goin' on!" in a fake suspicious voice, and Jenna said "We're not that Alaskan!". All our reactions were really funny (it was all in the delivery, like I said before, sometimes you have to have been there to believe it). It was really funny when we spied Keith open the lid to smell the brownies. He wasn't going to eat one, just smell them.
I was having a fair map signed (because my butterfly notepad had run out of papers!) and Joanie was getting her notebook signed when Don asked Joanie what she was going to do with all the autographs that she got from them. He was making up a whole story about how she was going to sell them for tons of money like thirty years from then on antique road show, and that people wouldn't even know who they were really because they had gotten so much better over the years. He was being really funny (sadly I can't remember everything that he said because I was a little bit further ahead of Joanie).
I went down the line and began to talk to Brian. It was probably one of the smartest things I've ever done! Considering how much I enjoyed it!
I asked him why he used a skateboard during practice and he told me that he liked to use skateboards. Next I asked him how long he had been using skateboards. He replied "...about, thirty years." with a shrug of his shoulders as if he was almost embarrassed that he was so bad on the skateboard when he had so long to practice on it (and almost like he didn't want to say that he was getting old or something).
Then I asked him how long he had been using the skates. To that he replied that he picked it up pretty soon after he picked up the skateboard. Then he bent over the table rather excitedly with his elbow on the table and pointing at me (I think he thought it was cool that I chose to talk to him instead of talking to one of the other guys) and asked "You wanna know why I picked up the skates?". Of course I had no idea why he had picked up the skates so it was all green lights for him to tell me. I was ready to listen.
As he began to tell me why, the guys next to him started getting louder and I couldn't quite hear Brian! For that awful moment my heart stopped, I hadn't heard what Brian had said (although I could have just asked him what he said, I mean, it wasn't even my fault that I didn't hear him, I was listening quite intently)! But right after it I gathered, by quickly thinking it out, that he had said "because I liked to go to the roller rinks when I was a kid." then he started shaking his head slightly and said "Then I saw people doing tricks on the ramps and I was like, awwww!". I guess he thought that ramps were really cool (I certainly do). Sadly that pretty much ended my conversation with him, but I'll never regret talking to him, I really love that guy!
I went a little further down the line (starting to catch up with my fair map ;)). Mike was sitting next to Josh when I asked "were they teasing you during the show, Josh?" Mike put his arm around Josh's shoulder and said "we love this kid, he's so cute!" (view our picture of them
here). Joanie took a picture of Mike and he and then asked "Josh, I just took your picture with his arm around you, isn't that embarrassing?" and Josh's reply was "Sadly it's not the first time!" in an exasperated voice. Mike even pinched Josh's cheek to embarrass him further after that.
Joanie said that Josh tried to to wiggle his way away from Mike and almost kicked Brian in the face while doing it!
Jenna was still talking so I did what I had wanted to do all through the signing (come to think of it I had wanted to do it for days), I went behind the signing table to get my picture taken with Brian!
As I was walking over my ten dollar bill fell out of my pocket and when Brian saw it he squeaked out (yes, he squeaked out) "Money!". Joanie sarcastically said, "Ooh, I had better pick this up before Brian gets it." then Brian said "I wasn't going to take it." (like Joanie didn't know that though).
When I got behind the signing table and sat next to him I said "I have to get my picture taken with you.". He was okay with that but he said to the guys "don't leave without me." (I don't think he knew where they were going exactly, so he didn't want them to leave while he was getting his picture taken). Joanie took one picture of us (click
here) and then Brian said "I'm going to do and A for Alaska.". He put his hands over his head to indicate an A, then he said "or maybe it's Alaskan mountains.". I joined him and Don came up behind us and joined in making a full mountain range of hands (view it here)!
Then Joanie sat down next to him to get her picture taken with him. He started wiping his eyes because there were spots in them from the camera (I know that's why because as I was looking through the camera at Joanie and him and I couldn't see his face at all because I had spots in my eyes) and Joanie said sarcastically "Oh great Jessie, now you have a picture of Brian wiping his nose!" and Brian didn't catch that it was a joke and made it clear that he wasn't wiping his nose "It wasn't my nose. It was my eyes. I was wiping my eyes!". I took two picture (view one
here) of them (one with my camera and one with Joanie's) and then we had to start heading out (so that we weren't bothering the guys anymore).
As we walked out we were screaming back and forth with Brian. We don't know why. It was just fun. After that we walked around the fair which doesn't have anything to do with BMX so I'll stop there... So... until next year BMX!
